Qualifying format, emergency provisional program changed

March 14, 2021

The USMTS has adopted a qualifying format in 2021 with drivers participating in group qualifying with their heat race group and then lining up to start the heat race with the top four qualifiers inverted by best lap time. From there, the show is run just like a typical USMTS race during the past 22 seasons.

In calculating passing points, quick time in the group will get 2 bonus points, second quick gets 1.5, third gets 1 and fourth gets 0.5 to help ease the pain of the invert.

If USMTS officials feel this format becomes troublesome or unfair to competitors, we reserve the right to go back to a draw/redraw format using the traditional USMTS passing points.

Emergeny Provisionals: Drivers with perfect attendance last year are permitted to use an emergency provisional immediately in 2021. Beginning with the ninth race of the season (currently Lakeside Speedway on May 14) all drivers with perfect attendance this year are eligible to use an emergency provisional when failing to qualify for the “A” Main.

In addition to the normal two provisionals based on points each night, the USMTS will start up to four (4) additional emergency provisionals based off current points.

It is the driver’s job to locate a USMTS official and declare that you want to use an emergency provisional.

When using an emergency provisional, drivers earn the non-qualifier tow money plus any additional amount earned above start money will be added to that.
